Description

A savory twist on classic meatloaf inspired by French onion soup, made with juicy seasoned beef, caramelized buttered onions, and melted Swiss cheese for a rich and comforting dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb (700 g) ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 3/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Cooking spray or oil for greasing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a loaf pan.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and cook sliced onions for 15–20 minutes until soft and caramelized. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme.
  4. Gently fold in half of the caramelized onions and half of the Swiss cheese.
  5. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared loaf pan.
  6. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven and top with remaining onions and Swiss cheese.
  8. Return to oven and bake an additional 10–15 minutes until cheese is melted and internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
  9. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the meatloaf to keep it tender.
  • Gruyère cheese can be used instead of Swiss for a more traditional flavor.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or green beans for a complete meal.
