Description
A savory twist on classic meatloaf inspired by French onion soup, made with juicy seasoned beef, caramelized buttered onions, and melted Swiss cheese for a rich and comforting dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lb (700 g) ground beef
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
- 3/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Cooking spray or oil for greasing
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a loaf pan.
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and cook sliced onions for 15–20 minutes until soft and caramelized. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme.
- Gently fold in half of the caramelized onions and half of the Swiss cheese.
- Press the mixture evenly into the prepared loaf pan.
- Bake uncovered for 45 minutes.
- Remove from oven and top with remaining onions and Swiss cheese.
- Return to oven and bake an additional 10–15 minutes until cheese is melted and internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Do not overmix the meatloaf to keep it tender.
- Gruyère cheese can be used instead of Swiss for a more traditional flavor.
- Serve with mashed potatoes or green beans for a complete meal.
