Description
A classic diner-style sandwich made with a juicy beef patty, melted cheese, and caramelized onions, served on toasted rye bread with a delicious secret sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 4 slices rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and smoked paprika (if using) to make the secret sauce. Set aside.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add olive oil. Sauté the sliced onions until they are golden and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Form the ground beef into 4 equal patties, and season with salt and pepper.
- In the same skillet, cook the beef patties for about 4-5 minutes per side or until they reach your desired doneness. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.
- While the patties cook, butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Toast the bread in a separate skillet over medium heat until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
- Assemble the patty melts by spreading a generous amount of the secret sauce on the unbuttered side of the toasted bread. Place a patty with melted cheese on top, followed by a few spoonfuls of caramelized onions. Top with the other slice of toasted bread, buttered side out.
- Serve hot, cut in half, and enjoy!
Notes
- For an extra kick, add a few slices of pickles or jalapeños to the sandwich.
- If you prefer a different cheese, cheddar or American work well as alternatives.
- This sandwich pairs well with fries or a simple salad.
