Description

A classic diner-style sandwich made with a juicy beef patty, melted cheese, and caramelized onions, served on toasted rye bread with a delicious secret sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and smoked paprika (if using) to make the secret sauce. Set aside.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add olive oil. Sauté the sliced onions until they are golden and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Form the ground beef into 4 equal patties, and season with salt and pepper.
  4. In the same skillet, cook the beef patties for about 4-5 minutes per side or until they reach your desired doneness. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  5. While the patties cook, butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Toast the bread in a separate skillet over medium heat until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  6. Assemble the patty melts by spreading a generous amount of the secret sauce on the unbuttered side of the toasted bread. Place a patty with melted cheese on top, followed by a few spoonfuls of caramelized onions. Top with the other slice of toasted bread, buttered side out.
  7. Serve hot, cut in half, and enjoy!

Notes

  • For an extra kick, add a few slices of pickles or jalapeños to the sandwich.
  • If you prefer a different cheese, cheddar or American work well as alternatives.
  • This sandwich pairs well with fries or a simple salad.
