Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda

- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot coffee or hot water
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup milk (for frosting)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract and beat until smooth.
- Slowly mix in the hot coffee or hot water until the batter is thin and well combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, melt butter in a saucepan and stir in cocoa powder.
- Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and spreadable.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a thick layer of frosting on top.
- Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides evenly.
- Let the frosting set slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Hot coffee enhances the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste like coffee.
- You can add chocolate chips to the batter for extra richness.
