Description
A rich and indulgent dessert made with chunks of bread soaked in a dark chocolate custard, then baked until soft and gooey inside with a slightly crisp top.
Ingredients
- 4 cups day-old bread, cubed
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 150 g dark chocolate, chopped
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking dish with butter.
- Place the cubed bread into the prepared dish.
- In a saucepan, heat milk and cream until warm, then add chopped dark chocolate and stir until melted.
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
- Slowly pour the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture, whisking continuously.
- Pour the custard over the bread, pressing gently so all pieces absorb the liquid.
- Let it sit for 10 minutes to soak.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes until set but still slightly soft in the center.
- Cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Use stale bread for better absorption.
- Add chocolate chips for extra richness.
- Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
- Do not overbake to keep it moist and fudgy.
