Description

A rich and indulgent dessert made with chunks of bread soaked in a dark chocolate custard, then baked until soft and gooey inside with a slightly crisp top.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups day-old bread, cubed
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 150 g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Place the cubed bread into the prepared dish.
  3. In a saucepan, heat milk and cream until warm, then add chopped dark chocolate and stir until melted.
  4. In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Slowly pour the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture, whisking continuously.
  6. Pour the custard over the bread, pressing gently so all pieces absorb the liquid.
  7. Let it sit for 10 minutes to soak.
  8. Bake for 35–40 minutes until set but still slightly soft in the center.
  9. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use stale bread for better absorption.
  • Add chocolate chips for extra richness.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  • Do not overbake to keep it moist and fudgy.
